A Spiritual Journey: Varanasi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya & Gaya – May 2025

In May 2025, I set out on a deeply spiritual journey covering Varanasi, Prayagraj (Allahabad), Ayodhya, and Gaya. Each city offered a unique blend of divinity, tradition, and life lessons. Here's a detailed travelogue with practical tips, so you can plan your trip with ease.

🛩 Chennai to Varanasi

Took a direct Indigo flight from Chennai to Varanasi – smooth and convenient. Highly recommend booking important temple darshans well in advance to avoid last-minute stress.

🌸 Varanasi Highlights

🌅 Kashi Vishwanath Temple – Mangal Aarti

Book Mangal Aarti tickets (₹500/person) well in advance. Extremely tough to get but one of the most divine darshans you can experience in Kashi. No phones allowed – carry printed tickets + Aadhar ID. Reach before 3 AM by auto, drop sandals near the temple (note the shop!). During darshan, we could touch and perform abhishekam for Lord Shiva with milk, water, and bilvam leaves – unforgettable experience.

🌺 Other temples & rituals

Visit Annapoorni Temple early morning – if possible, request entry into the sanctum and collect rice prasadam wrapped in cloth to keep at home. Stop at Kala Bhairavi Temple, get the sacred black thread blessed, and tie it around your wrist. Don't miss Kasi Visalakshi Amman temple nearby.

🚤 Ganga Experience

Take a dip in the Ganga on the opposite bank. Witness Ganga Aarti in the evening – from the ghat or on a boat (my pick: from a boat for the full view). Boat ride covering 64 ghats after the Aarti is magical.

🍲 Food & Stay

Stayed at Divine Hotel – walking distance to ghats, shopping streets, and temples. Must try: Banarasi lassi from street stalls – thick, creamy, and unforgettable.

🌊 Prayagraj (Allahabad) – Triveni Sangam

On Day 1, traveled from Varanasi to Prayagraj. Stayed at Hotel Shree Bandhu Inn – simple, comfortable, and perfect for overnight rest. Don't miss their lassi & buttermilk café.

🌅 Triveni Sangam Darshan

Start early on Day 2. Carry a change of clothes. Buy a plastic can here to collect Ganga jal (allowed here but not in Kashi). Boat ride to the confluence for Snan – surreal experience where Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati meet. Do ask the boat photographer to click your pictures – you can collect them later. Changing clothes is easy – we used sarees for cover. Many couples perform Pinda or Dambadi pooja here. Breakfast at nearby Dharmasala was simple and filling.

(Optional: Visit Hanuman temple if time permits – we skipped due to schedule.)

🕉 Ayodhya – Ram Janmabhoomi

🌊 Sarayu River & Local Flavors

Started with a peaceful stroll at the Sarayu river bank. Sipped fresh orange juice and picked up a yellow scarf with Jai Shree Ram printed on it as a souvenir.

🌟 Ram Janmabhoomi Darshan

Book Sugam Darshan (free) a month in advance – Aadhar IDs required for all. Carry printouts of booking & IDs – mobiles not allowed inside. Only carry cash in a small pouch – not even water bottles are permitted. Enter via side entrance for Sugam ticket holders; elderly can use wheelchair access with ID. Several security checkpoints along the way – plan to reach well before your time slot. Sandal deposits are right near the entrance – wear footwear till the last possible step.

Inside the temple: Witnessed divine carvings of Vishnu Ananta Shayanam, Ganapathi, Hanuman. Rama Lalla's idol is truly heart-melting – the divinity is palpable. Evening 7 PM Arti is spectacular – we were blessed to witness both Sugam and Arti darshan.

After darshan: Don't miss the free sugar-ball prasadam. Step out to see Sugrivar temple in South Indian style. Dinner at Udupi Hotel just outside – perfect ending. Best to stay overnight in Ayodhya to explore Hanuman temple and nearby sites. Picked up several fridge magnets as keepsakes and gifts for friends and family.

🌿 Gaya – Pind Daan & Bodh Gaya

✨ Vishnupad Temple & Pind Daan

Performed Pind Daan rituals at Vishnupad Temple – the same rites believed to have been performed by Sita Devi for King Dasharatha. The priest was sincere, but expect frequent money requests inside – keep small denomination notes (₹20 & ₹50) handy.

🌳 Bodh Gaya Visit

Took an auto to Bodh Gaya – worth the detour. Witnessed the majestic Mahabodhi Temple and the sacred Peepul tree where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. No mobiles allowed inside – use official temple photographers. Spend some quiet moments meditating in the temple and gardens – it's serene beyond words.

🙏 Final Reflections

This journey through Kashi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya, and Gaya was not just about travel, but about touching the roots of faith, culture, and history. From the divine early morning Mangal Aarti in Kashi to the tranquil Peepul tree in Bodh Gaya, every moment felt like a blessing.

If you're planning a trip: Book darshans in advance (Mangal Aarti & Sugam Darshan). Travel light – minimal valuables, lots of devotion and cash/Gpay 😉.

Stay flexible – temple schedules, crowds, and wait times can change.

Would I do it again? Absolutely – but next time, I'll spend more days in Ayodhya. 🌸
