San Jose to San Francisco: A Fun and Work Trip Unique California Adventure

There are family trips or a business trip, and then there are trips where you accidentally discover why people fall in love with a place.

My recent visit to San Jose and San Francisco started with family for a function quickly followed by work and networking trip. This became a memorable mix of South Indian comfort food, scenic coastal drives, iconic landmarks, and conversations with colleagues.

Starting in San Jose

One of my favorite parts of travel is finding familiar flavors in new places.

For breakfast, Mylapore Express served a satisfying South Indian thali-style experience that instantly felt like home. Ratna Cafe's idli sambar was another highlight. Add a strong filter coffee, some cut mango pickle, and moor milagai to take back, and I was set.

Sometimes it's the simple things that make a destination memorable.

The Monterey Bay and Carmel Drive

If you have a free day while visiting Silicon Valley, make time for the drive toward Monterey and Carmel.

Carmel Beach was one of the biggest surprises of the trip. Families, dogs, and visitors walked along the bright white sand while waves rolled in from the Pacific. Scattered across the shoreline were beautiful white and blue shells, little reminders of the ocean's constant activity.

Getting your feet wet here feels almost mandatory.

The Famous 17-Mile Drive

The entry fee is worth it.

The 17-Mile Drive offers multiple viewpoints that seem designed for photography. Every few minutes you'll find yourself stopping for another picture.

Highlights included:

• Pebble Beach Golf Links
• Pebble Beach Resort
• Stunning ocean overlooks
• The famous Lone Cypress
• Windswept cypress trees along the coast

As sunset approached, the coastline transformed into one of the most beautiful scenes of the trip.

Big Sur and Bixby Bridge

Continue south and you'll reach some of California's most photographed landscapes.

Bixby Bridge is every bit as impressive in person as it is in photos. The combination of cliffs, ocean, and engineering creates a view that feels almost unreal.

If timing allows, plan your visit around sunset.

Hello, San Francisco

San Francisco feels different from every other American city I've visited.

The weather changes quickly, often thanks to "Karl the Fog," the local nickname for the city's famous marine layer. Even on pleasant days, carrying a light jacket is a smart decision.

Getting Around

One of the most interesting experiences was riding in a Waymo. Watching a driverless vehicle navigate city streets still feels like stepping into the future.

For downtown travel, Uber was generally the easiest option. While driving is certainly possible, I often found it simpler and less stressful to use rideshare services.

The Waterfront Experience

The waterfront is one of San Francisco's biggest attractions.

Walking around the piers gives you a mix of food, entertainment, shopping, and incredible bay views. Pier 39 remains a favorite for visitors, with plenty of activity, food stalls, fruit vendors, and the occasional churro stop.

The Red and White Fleet's one-hour Golden Gate cruise provides some of the best views of the city skyline, Alcatraz, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Palace of Fine Arts

The Palace of Fine Arts stopped me in my tracks.

Photos don't quite capture the scale and beauty of the structure. It feels timeless and remains one of the most impressive architectural landmarks in the city.

Ghirardelli Square

A San Francisco classic.

The combination of chocolate, ice cream, waterfront atmosphere, and history makes this an easy recommendation for first-time visitors.

Work, Networking, and Conference Life

This trip wasn't just sightseeing.

The Moscone Center area was busy with conferences, meetings, and networking opportunities. One thing I appreciated was how much is within walking distance:

• AMC Theatre
• Ross Dress for Less
• Restaurants and coffee shops

For informal meetings, B55 inside the Marriott Marquis proved to be a convenient location to connect with colleagues and clients.

I also enjoyed catching up with my colleague over lunch at Balboa Cafe before heading back to conference sessions.

Where I Stayed

The Courtyard property near Van Ness turned out to be an excellent choice for a work-focused stay.

What stood out:

• Helpful front desk team
• Cozy lobby spaces
• Complimentary water
• Convenient Uber access
• A comfortable atmosphere after long conference days

Sometimes a hotel simply does its job well, and that makes all the difference.

A Great Dinner Recommendation

Amber India was packed, which tells you everything you need to know.

Reservations are highly recommended.

The soft tava roti, dal tadka, and rich kadai paneer made for a memorable dinner after a long day of meetings and walking around the city.

Final Thoughts

What started as a family and work trip became a reminder that some of the best travel experiences happen when you leave room for curiosity.

One day you're discussing business at a conference. The next you're watching waves crash near the Lone Cypress, walking through Ghirardelli Square with ice cream in hand, or standing beneath the Golden Gate Bridge wondering how many people have had that exact same moment of awe.

If you're traveling to the Bay Area for a family event or work, give yourself an extra day or two.

The meetings may bring you there.

The coastline, food, and unforgettable views will make you want to return.
